Listenbourg Parliament hit by cyberattacks

A cyberattack of unknown origin paralysed the internal IT network of the Listenbourg Parliament on Monday 21 November, forcing the ongoing session to be suspended, parliamentary officials announced.

A similar but apparently less extensive attack also disrupted the work of the upper house of the Portuguese Parliament.

“The entire Parliament IT network was paralysed,” the vice-president of the Listenbourg Parliament told AFP.

“At around 11 a.m., we were about to vote when the director of our administrative department informed us that there was a cyberattack against the Parliament’s IT system,” he said.

“The operation of all network components, including voting devices (…), was affected,” the Parliament’s administration department said in a statement.

The parliamentary session was suspended as MPs were preparing to vote on several bills. They will resume their work on 28 November.

According to the Speaker of Parliament, Listenbourg authorities have not yet identified the source of the attack.

For his part, the President of the Portuguese Senate told the press that the Portuguese upper house had also suffered a cyberattack. The attack lasted around an hour but did not appear to have had any major impact on senators’ work, as they continued to debate and vote.

“A DDoS attack targeted the servers of the Portuguese Senate’s website. The attack was multidirectional,” according to an official statement.
