1- Search engine optimization
Google has been advocating for a safer web for several years now. In 2014, the company announced that it wanted to encourage websites to switch to HTTPS. But over the past few months, the situation has changed: the Mountain View giant has taken action.
Olivier Andrieu (the pope of French SEO and author of the bestseller Réussir son référencement Web) announced at the beginning of the year in a video titled HTTPS SEO: Go for It in 2017! that, as early as November 2016, he had observed that some websites that had migrated to HTTPS had improved their ranking in Google search results.
HTTPS has therefore become a real factor taken into account when calculating the search engine's famous ranking.
Installing an SSL certificate on your website therefore becomes a real competitive advantage in the short term and an essential step in the medium term to maintain your ranking in search engines compared with the competition.
Paradoxically, although Google rewards websites using the SSL/TLS protocol, when you decide to switch from HTTP to HTTPS, your website is considered to have a new domain name. It is therefore necessary to follow best practices to inform the search engine of this change and preserve your SEO.

2- Trust
Using HTTPS for your website is a genuine sign of trust for visitors.
Until now, the only indication of a website's security for visitors was the display of the padlock in the address bar.
Developers of browsers such as Chrome and Firefox have announced that, in new versions of their tools, they will display alert messages for pages that remain on HTTP.

Since version 56, Chrome has added a “Not Secure” message that is now displayed in the address bar for pages containing a form or login fields. When you click on this alert, the following message appears: “Your connection to this site is not secure. You should not enter any sensitive information on this site (….)”
As Eric Lawrence (Chrome Security Team) announced on the Google blog:
[dt_quote type= »pullquote » layout= »left » font_size= »big » animation= »none » size= »1″]Chrome will show the Not Secure warning for all pages over HTTP, whether or not the page contains sensitive input fields. You should consider migrating your site to use HTTPS for all pages..[/dt_quote]
In upcoming versions, Chrome will therefore display alerts on all HTTP websites. Notifications will become increasingly explicit, particularly through the use of red icons and warning messages. With the growing fear of hacking, it is essential that these messages do not appear on your website, otherwise you risk driving visitors away.

3- Security
The well-known HTTP protocol is the main protocol used on the Web. Created in 1990, it enables data to be exchanged online. However, it has one major drawback: information travels in clear text across networks. In practical terms, if a malicious person intercepts this information, they can very easily learn everything about an internet user's behavior.
SSL and TLS protocols make it possible to secure data exchanges on the Internet through an advanced encryption system. HTTPS therefore naturally developed first on online payment websites to protect banking data.
However, many sensitive data items still pass through HTTP websites, such as personal information submitted through a form or password entries. With the growing number of cyberattacks, it is becoming essential to secure the data passing through a website.
As you can see, switching to HTTPS has become essential for all websites in order to secure data, gain visitors' trust, and ensure good search engine optimization.
